Overview
The Stanford OHS STEAMS group - in partnership with the STEAMS organization - presented three themed project topics, each of which harnessed the power of JMP and the multidisciplinary framework of STEAMS to explore and uncover new solutions to practical problems. The first topic was poker and involved using eigenvector plots and probability to model players’ psyches through a game of AKQJ cards. This modified Poker game enabled the players to calculate their overall winning probability and make more rational betting decisions. The second topic consisted of studies on common injuries, specifically in regard to basketball and figure skating, and applications of clustering and principal component analyses (PCA) to devise different exercise regimens and prevention strategies to minimize these injuries. The third program topic was COVID-19, in which the infection rate was modeled in different countries using nonparametric (NP) density, and the model results were further analyzed to assess how the progression of the virus would have influenced President Trump’s reelection chances. The event concluded with a keynote presentation that used modern artificial intelligence tools to compare and predict the relationship between cooking time and energy consumption in order to optimize dumpling preparation, in light of the increasing demand on businesses to deliver nutritious food rapidly, as a result the COVID-19 pandemic.
